OfficeMax Unveils 4000+ Pound, 175,000 Band 'World's Largest Rubber Band Ball'
NAPERVILLE, Ill., Nov. 16 /PRNewswire/
OfficeMax, a leading provider of office products and services, announced today that it is sponsoring what is likely to be crowned the Largest Rubber Band Ball by Guinness World Records at a special ceremony being held in downtown Chicago on Tuesday, November 21.
OfficeMax is transporting the World's Largest Rubber Band Ball in early- November from the Eugene, Oregon garage of creator Steve Milton to downtown Chicago for its official November 21, 11:00 a.m. weigh-in ceremony with Guinness World Records at State Street and Jackson. Experts predict the OfficeMax-sponsored rubber band ball -- created by Milton with help from his 6-year-old son, Bryce -- will break the earlier world record of 3,120 pounds, set by John Bain of Wilmington, Del. The 26-year-old Milton, who started his ball in November 2005 with a number of small OfficeMax rubber bands, says the ball now contains 175,000 individual rubber bands. The rubber ball stands 5 1/2 feet-high and has a circumference of 19 feet.
OfficeMax is sponsoring Milton as he strives to earn the new world's record as part of its kick-off of a nationwide remodel for OfficeMax retail stores starting with 11 Chicago-area locations. The renovated OfficeMax stores feature a new, easy-to-shop layout that offers an in-store cafe with WiFi connectivity, a computerized Ink Refill station, a technology hub where consumers may try out the newest electronic devices, and other shopping amenities.
"OfficeMax is honored to sponsor Steve Milton as he nears his date with fame, November 21, when his rubber band ball is proclaimed by judges from the world-famous Guinness World Records as the Largest Rubber Band Ball," says Ryan Vero, EVP-chief merchandising officer of OfficeMax. Chicagoans are encouraged to attend the Nov. 21 event to have their photos taken with the Largest Rubber Band Ball.
After the November 21 Guinness World Record weighing, the newly-crowned Largest Rubber Band Ball will celebrate its coronation by appearing in the November 23 McDonald's Thanksgiving Day Parade for the first time in its hometown of Chicago. The World's Largest Rubber Band Ball will be exhibited throughout December 2006 and January 2007 at 14 of the new and remodeled OfficeMax stores across Chicago.
OfficeMax is selling 3-inch-diameter Rubber Band Balls in many of its U.S. retail stores. Consumers are being encouraged to buy a package of rubber bands at their local OfficeMax store -- as Steve Milton did -- to begin their own quest to build the next World's Largest Rubber Band Ball.
